Michael Yamashita, a 28-year veteran at National Geographic, will give you that experience in Seattle. We will approach this workshop as if we are on assignment for the Geographic. In-class sessions include digital image presentations, lectures and discussion covering editorial requirements for major magazines, how to find, develop and "pitch" a story idea, the importance of research and access, and what equipment to use.

The first day is spent scouting locations and planning out shoot lists. The rest of the days we will work with the magic light of dawn and sunset exploring our own personal Seattle photo stories. Our focus is on expanding visual sensitivity and capturing the atmosphere, mood and emotion of light. Our goal is to create and inspire new photographs for our portfolios. Between shoots, there will be daily edits and critiques of the previous day's work, story development meetings, conceptual and technical problem solving and a discussion of philosophical issues of photography. On the final day we'll have a show of our group's best photographs of the week.

Bring a portfolio of 10 digital files for a critique on the first day. Images should be 1400 pixels by 1050 pixels, and on a jump drive or CD. You should also have in mind a story idea that you will want to shoot during this class. Because this workshop will be fast-moving and Mike will be providing immediate feedback on your images, students are required to shoot digitally, preferably with a DSLR. The school has 12 PC workstations available for downloading your flash cards, but you may bring your own laptop if you wish.

Come join Michael for four days of adventure and discovery!
